Watch this comprehensive video guide to quickly learn how to play Spades. Perfect for beginners and those looking to refresh their knowledge of the game rules, bidding strategies, and basic gameplay.
This tutorial covers all aspects of Spades gameplay including card values, bidding, tricks, scoring, and common strategies to help you master the game.
Spades is a trick-taking card game played with a standard 52-card deck. The game is typically played with four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting across from each other.
The objective is to take at least as many tricks as your team bid before the hand begins. Spades is always trump, meaning a spade will beat any card of another suit.
Before play begins, each player must bid on how many tricks they think they'll take. The total of you and your partner's bids is your team's contract that you'll try to make.
A special bid, "Nil," means you're betting that you won't take any tricks at all. This is risky but offers bonus points if successful.
The player to the left of the dealer leads the first trick. Players must follow suit if possible. If you can't follow suit, you can play any card, including a spade.
The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a spade is played, in which case the highest spade wins. The winner of each trick leads the next one.
Teams score 10 points for each trick bid and made. Any tricks taken beyond the bid (overtricks) are worth 1 point each.
If a team fails to make their bid, they lose 10 points for each trick they bid. A successful Nil bid scores 100 bonus points, while a failed Nil bid costs 100 points.
